Edit row without need for context menu

It's possible to edit rows in a list by right clicking the list and choosing edit in grid. This works fine but I would like to see a more user-friendly option. I propose the following:

When hovering over a row a pencil appears at the end of the row. By clicking the pencil the user opens up the row for editing. The pencil is replaced with save and cancel buttons. After pressing the save button the changes are written to the row and the user is then able to do the same again with other rows. As long as the row is editable the other rows are locked for this user only to prevent mistakenly editing data in the wrong row.

This not only seems more intuitive than the current edit in grid option but it also allows for editing the grid without a form and without the drawbacks that come with making the grid editable by default.
