Drag & Drop handle on right side (Universal)

When drag & drop is enabled on the Universal GUI, a handle icon is added on the left side of the grid for every row.

Please make it possible for a developer to determine on which side of the grid this handle is displayed. When the dropping is done on a detail on the right side, it is more convenient for the user only having to drag the row over a small part of the screen.

Of course when the handle is displayed on the right side, it should still be a locked column so it doesn’t disappear when not scrolled to the right.

Hi Peter!

Interesting idea.
What feedback did you receive from your users? Are the cursor movements expected of them only horizontal or also vertical)? Is there a specific reason you want to be able to configure the location for the drag icon, or is default Universal behavior also an option?

Placing the drag/drop icon on the right side of a grid (especially wider grids) seems like a logical idea, but we have to take into account that this idea places the drag icon out of sight. In most applications, drag/drop icons are always shown at the start of a row, so users can instantly recognize a row is draggable. Placing it on the far end of a row, potentially ‘hides’ this function, nullifying this concept.

However, how about this addition to your idea: instead of making it a determination of the developer (introducing extra load for you as a developer on remembering this function and adding it to the rigth place), we could add an extra drag icon to the right side of a row only shown on hover of that row. In addition, we could base showing the drag icon on a breaking point (so smaller grids with draggable rows don't have a drag icon on both sides).

The feedback of our users is that they don’t want to drag the rows over the whole screen. We solved this for now by placing the drop window on the left side, but this is not our preferred solution because for a consistent screen layout we normally always place the main grid on the left and details on the right (see screenshot below).

“we have to take into account that this idea places the drag icon out of sight”, this is why I said it should still be a locked column on the right side, so it is not influenced by the scrollbar and never gets out of sight. Nevertheless, we would be fine if the drag icon is shown both on the left and right side or if it would work with a hover-over function.
