When I logon to the community and I check the box: "keep me signed in" it will keep me signed in for the day / session.
But the next day I have te sign in again, is this by design or a bug?

"keep me signed in" is not keeping me signed in.

The 'Stay signed in' feature has not been implemented yet, but it will be soon. The user interface is a bit misleading by implying that this feature already works.
