How do I disable the default password + 2FA authentication for new users?

Hi,

It is my understanding that since a recent Thinkwise platform update, the default authentication method for new users seems to be set to Password + 2FA. Some of the users for our app wish to use only a Password to login. However, when we try to pass the authentication type for password at user creation, that doesn’t seem to work (or maybe I'm doing it wrong.)

Could someone provide me with the correct way to set the standard authentication type for new users back to just Password?

Thank you in advance!

Anyone have a solution for this?

Hi Rob,

The standard authentication method is set to password + 2FA because this is the recommended approach with respect to security.

If you want to add a user for which you want to configure password only, you can change the field to “Password”. When I try to do this, I get the following popup:

Popup with security warning

You can close the popup, fill the remaining mandatory information and save the record.

An alternative is to copy an existing user which already has the authentication type set to “Password”. This will also set the login method for the new user to “Password”.

If this does not work in your case, can you give us more information on what you are seeing?

Best regards,

Hi Nick,

thank you for your reply. I am aware that I am able to manually able to change the login type for users and this works correctly (I have been doing so manually for new users up until now). However, my question is a little different: I would like to set it up so that newly created users by default will have their login/verification type set to Password only, without having to go in and manually change it for each new user. I fully realize that the Password + 2FA is the recommend approach for security and we are having this discussion at the moment if they will not consider switching to that; but in the meantime their wish is to set it up for login by Password only for new users. So my question is essentially how do I (best) achieve this if possible?

When I raised this as a support ticket I was also able to provide the following details on the community post, so here goes:

Do you currently see the Password option in IAM when editing the user?

I do, I am manually able to change it to a different option such as Password.

When this is changed to Password, can the user sign in using Password only, or does a error appear? If so, could you attach the error message?

It does work, no error messages

Which version of the platform are you currently using?

2025.2.

Hope I provided you with enough information, otherwise let me know.

Kind regards,
Rob

Hi Rob,

Unfortunately, there is no reason to do so at the moment.

You can create an idea for this in the community. The more votes the idea gets, the higher the priority will become!
