When an item in a form list is changed, but results in an error (in the trigger), it looks like there is no message shown to the user. Is that intended? Or am I doing something wrong here?

+4It might help a bit if you provide a little more information, such as which GUI it is that you’re using, what the code in your trigger looks like, etc. Also, is the behavior different if you use a regular form instead of a formlist, i.e. do you indeed see the expected error message in the other component?
