As you probably noticed, we have launched MCP support for our Platform as a beta feature with release 2026.2.12! The initial communication has been about using MCP on customer applications. And because the Software Factory and IAM are built with the Thinkwise Platform itself, MCP is technically available for those applications too!

Given the eagerness to work via MCP on the Software Factory, we invite you to start using it now. Keep the known limitations below in mind. Specifically, double-check that you are applying the best practice of setting your MAIN branch to Read only.
Known limitations
The main reasons for not advertising the use of MCP on the Software Factory so far, have to do with our desire to implement additional controls:
- More granular access control for MCP: in its current form, MCP would be able to alter every branch for which you as a user have edit permissions. We will adjust this by adding a Branch-level setting that determines whether mutations are allowed via delegated access.
- Clear tracing of mutations made by MCP: changes made by MCP are currently not explicitly traced in the Software Factory. With Indicium 2026.2.13 we have launched a new session variable tsf_is_delegated_request, which we intend to use to explicitly show in the Trace fields what changes are made via delegated access.
Both improvements will ship with STS 2026.2.14 on the 28th of September and with LTS 2026.3 the 5th of October.
Other known limitations with the current version of MCP:
- Subject Variants are not yet exposed via MCP
- For Tasks available in both the menu and as Table task, only Table tasks work with MCP
- Creating Unit Tests via MCP does not yet work
- Only Role Software developer is available, effectively giving MCP All rights
Most of these limitations will be resolved with LTS 2026.3.
Set up MCP on the Software Factory
The steps in the Getting started with MCP blog apply to an IAM with the Application SF in combination with the Role Software development. Configure the following four settings:
- User: Allow access delegation
- Application: Allow access delegation
- Application > Authorization settings > Access delegation roles: Available for delegation for the Software development role
- Client applications: Create Client with related configuration
Thinkwise Skills repository
Claude Code proves surprisingly strong at getting its job done on the Software Factory. Among other things, it will use Tooltip information from the model to get additional context with all available Subjects and Tasks via MCP.
But as you all know, there is more to good application development than finding your way in the Software Factory.
