How to export HTML in Universal as plain text without all the tags?

Hi,

We noticed that when exporting HTML columns in Windows, the data would automatically be stripped off html tags and only output the plaint ext.

In Universal, the raw html is exported, which is much less readable.

I was wondering if this is expected? We are on Universal and Indicium version 2026.2.12

I thought of implementing a workaround, by adding an expression column that strips the html to plain text, but I can’t easily ensure users will export that instead of the regular column and it seems messy to add this to the tables.

Might a next release support automatic html to plain text conversion?

I’m not sure if I am missing something, or what the status is of this, hence I would like more info/advice instead of creating an idea. Thanks!

@Tim Scholten  thanks! that will work for us.

“Sets whether HTML formatting is allowed when you create an export. If enabled no formatting is applied and your export will be generated in plain text.”
This implies that without the extended property, formatting is applied, it is not though…

Hi Robin,

Yes, this is expected. In Universal an HTML column is exported as it is stored, and there's no export setting that converts it to plain text.

Your expression column gets you part of the way. If you disable Copy to clipboard / Export on the original HTML column, it's left out of Export immediately, so only the plain-text column ends up in that file. It does still appear in the Export wizard (but can be manually excluded), and users can no longer copy that field to the clipboard.

What would really solve this is a separate setting to exclude a column from export, independent of Copy to clipboard. I couldn't find an existing idea for that, so please post one in Ideas so others can vote on it.

Hey Robin,

There is however an extended property which you can enable which strips HTML and converts it to plain text. The default is false as you noticed, but can be enabled by using the extended property 'ExportStripHtml’. See https://docs.thinkwisesoftware.com/docs/sf/extended_properties for a list of all the extended properties.

Note that the extended property applies to a whole application.

Great to hear that!

And I agree that the current wording can be interpreted in multiple ways, with the way you interpreted it being the most likely one.
