The Thinkwise platform currently supports SQL Server, Oracle and DB2, three widely used RDBMS. According to Statista, they are indeed quite a popular choice and suited for large enterprise-level applications we make with Thinkwise.

PostgreSQL (Postgres) is a open source RDBMS unlike the others, that there are no license fees, is highly extensible, and is used over all the world, even by major companies.

I would love to see the interest by the Community for the Thinkwise platform to support PostgreSQL.

Concur, in Brazil I see it a lot as well alongside MongoDB (nosql).

I have no experience with MongoDB to be honest, but I feel MongoDB is not so much suited for applications build with Thinkwise. Or am I mistaken @Freddy?

Regarding current developments we started having internal discussions around becoming less dependent on Microsoft. PostGreSQL support would be a very welcome addition to the SQL family for the Thinkwise platform. Personally I’m all for supporting open-source platforms. This is also why I’m highly motivated to get our Dotnet applications to run on a Linux platform, something we’re about to test internally and possibly transfer our development environment onto within the foreseeable future. Our SQL Servers already run on Linux machines and have been doing so successfully for many years.

Another consideration could be to switch the Thinkwise platform to a Dotnet fork. With alternatives for Windows, SQL Server and Dotnet the platform and thus our organization would be a lot less dependent on Microsoft software and services.

I hope more people will hop on this train as it might prove vital for continuity.

Small addendum: I’m not sure if it’s already supported but it could be nice to be able to plugin an on-premise LLM into the software factory specifically for reviewing and even writing SQL code. This LLM could have full access to the database for producing relevant code and because it runs on-premise it doesn’t have to talk to the outside world keeping our data safe.

That's a great idea! Feel free to create an idea for this.

Hi @Mark Jongeling no, it's primarily No-SQL, but I was mentioning it because I think we had quite some potentials which came from Mongo DB. Perhaps an interesting one to add to the Upcycler.

But PostgreSQL would be welcome, to have an open-source alternative to at least start with.

The topic of supporting an open-source Database has been on the agenda for a while internally already. Last week it has been approved to move forward with PostgreSQL and development is expected to be picked up soon!
