Windows Security Update (KB5035853) errors

Hi everyone,The latest Windows security update (KB5035853) has been linked to instances of Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) errors for Windows 11 users. These errors can also occur when using the Thinkwise Windows GUI.More information here: Windows 11 Update Causing Serious Problems For Millions Of PC Users (forbes.com)For users who have not yet installed the update (KB5035853), it is recommended to postpone the installation until Microsoft releases a possible fix. For users currently experiencing BSOD errors or Thinkwise application issues after installing the update, we recommend uninstalling the update using standard Windows update uninstall procedures.Microsoft has acknowledged that it is investigating these issues and is expected to provide a fix in the near future.

Multirow task execution

When executing a task for a selection of rows, the user interface first executes the context procedure for every single row to check if the user is allowed to execute the task for that row, and then executes the task for each permitted row. This can be quite time consuming, especially for web clients where the progress is also reported back to the client.To speed up multirow task execution, a new feature has been developed to execute tasks for a selection of rows.To enable multirow execution for a task:Add an XML-typed parameter to the task Make sure Popup for each row is switched off Set the MultiselectParameterID extended property with the name of the parameterWith multirow execution enabled for a task, when the user interface executes the task, the specified XML parameter is filled with the parameter values for all rows. There is a lot of demand from the Thinkwise Community for easy uploading of multiple files via the Universal GUI; see this idea for example.For the Web GUI, @Harm Horstman developed a great solution that leverages a custom upload page in a preview component, but unfortunately this solution is less suitable for the Universal GUI as it bypasses Indicium and requires a separate application to be installed on the web server.Fortunately, it is relatively easy to develop a similar component that uses the Indicium API to upload files and integrate it in the Universal GUI. The Thinkwise Platform provides extensive, out-of-the-box support for the DB2 for IBM i database management system for many years already. That is why we have a large number of customers that successfully use the Thinkwise Platform to modernize their legacy DB2 application landscape. This is also recognized by IBM, who named Thinkwise as Best IBM Business Partner of the Year in Europe in 2009, and awarded one of our customers with the Most Innovative IBM i User of the Year award because it used the Thinkwise Platform.However, IBM did (and still does) not make things easy for us.When we started, IBM was still in the process of replacing their Classic Query Engine (CQE) with the much faster and more powerful SQL Query Engine (SQE), and we have been in regular contact with IBM about bugs in these query engines that nearly drove us insane. Customizing the Universal GUI using CSSBlog

We often get questions about customizing the Universal GUI, particularly the login page. We plan to offer several model-options to customize it in the future, such as the logo, colors, title text and background image, and to display maintenance messages, for example. But with the latest release of the Universal GUI, it is already possible to make these adjustments manually, using custom CSS! SetupStarting with the latest (beta) release of the Universal GUI it is possible to inject your own custom CSS to change the styling of various parts of the user interface.To get started, simply rename the custom.sample.css file in the public folder of the Universal GUI to custom.css. This file will then automatically be loaded by the Universal GUI. By renaming the file, it will no longer be overwritten with Universal GUI updates.Next, add your own CSS to the custom.css file and you’re off! Translated labels in reports

When creating multi-language applications, or applications for companies with customers in different countries, you probably want to translate the report labels too. To translate labels in a report you can retrieve the label transition from a data source, for instance a view. With the Software Factory, you can automatically generate these views with a dynamic concept. In this post we will show you how, by creating a view that returns the column-translations for every language in your project.To create a view for your report labels, you first need to model a view with an appl_lang_id column as the primary key and the required labels as columns. The name of the view will have a specific prefix (rpt_lbl_), to be able to recognize the report label views in our dynamic concept. Set the creation method of the view to Template. Translating model objects in business logic

Log4j vulnerability does NOT impact the Thinkwise PlatformNews

You have probably heard about the critical vulnerability found in the Apache Log4j library in the past few days, which is used by millions of Java applications for logging error messages. This vulnerability, CVE-2021-44228, is a Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability that allows attackers to gain full access to a system.The Thinkwise platform does not use Java and is therefore not subject to this vulnerability.Thinkwise does advise its customers to check whether other applications or services use the affected library and to take appropriate steps to prevent abuse.At Thinkwise, we closely monitor the security of all third party libraries and components used in our platform, and notify our customers if any vulnerabilities are reported.

Crystal Reports fails to connect

As of Windows Server 2019, Microsoft disabled the encryption protocols TLS 1.0 and 1.1 by default, and requires all connections to, for example, SQL Server instances on Windows Server 2019 to use TLS 1.2. This can cause problems with Crystal Reports documents that use the default SQL Server drivers included with Crystal Reports, instead of the Microsoft OLE DB Driver.To resolve this, you need to replace the drivers used by each report with the latest Microsoft OLE DB Driver for SQL Server, which you can download here. To update the driver in the report file:Open the Set Datasource Location dialog from the Database menu in the Crystal Reports designer. Select the connection to replace and click Make New Connection to create a connection using the Microsoft OLE DB Driver for SQL Server or select an existing MSOLEDBSQL connection. Do not use the Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server (SQLOLEDB). Select Update to replace the connection.Repeat this for all Crystal Reports files. An altern

Introducing variables in process flow input parameters

A small, but very useful improvement has been delivered in the latest release of the Windows and Web user interfaces and the Indicium Service tier. It is now possible to use process flow variables in the constant value of input parameters of process flow actions!To create the request URL for an HTTP connector based on user input, for example, instead of having to create the URL in the process action logic like this:set @url = 'https://api.overheid.io/bag?filters[postcode]=' + @postcodeYou can just set the value of the URL parameter like this: The user interfaces and service tier will automatically substitute {postcode} with the current value of the postcode process flow variable when the HTTP action is executed. Be careful when using this feature in the SQL parameter of a Database connector, as this increases the risk of SQL injection. Taking screenshots for the app storesBlog

Google Play and the Apple App Store require a number of screenshots for an app before it is admitted to the store. For iOS, these screenshots must exactly match the specified dimensions. But creating a 2732 x 2048 screenshot on a 1920 x 1080 monitor can be quite a challenge. This posts describes an easy way to create those screenshots using the Chrome DevTools. Step 1 Open the Thinkwise Viewer in debug mode using the included debug.bat file. This will show the Chrome DevTools inside the viewer. Step 2 Click the device toolbar icon at the top to show the Device Toolbar: Step 3 Select the appropriate device from the device toolbar. Optionally change the orientation using the rotate icon. Don’t worry if the image is zoomed or if it’s too large for your display. If the device is not available you can add an emulated or custom device using the Edit option. About a year ago we added SVG support to the Windows and Web GUIs. SVG images have the advantage that they can be scaled better than bitmap images and that it is easier to adjust, for example, the color of (parts of) an image. This is used extensively by the Universal GUI to match the color of icons to the chosen light or dark theme.Colored iconsWith the latest 2019.2 release of the Windows and Web GUIs, this feature has also been added to these GUIs.The Windows and Web GUI will now adjust the color of SVG icons to the theme color of the corresponding label, making it no longer necessary to add the same icon in different colors to the model. In preparation for this, we at Product Innovation have been busy converting the existing Word documents into a more consistent and reusable format: MarkDown. And because the Community site is not yet live, we have made the documentation available for now through our Office website. Check it out! Because MarkDown files are plain text files we can use the integrated GIT version control to easily make and review changes. Docusaurus is used to generate a website from the MarkDown files. In the upcoming release of the Web GUI, a major and possibly breaking change has been made in the way in which database connections are set up. Regardless of the type of authentication (database, Windows, IAM or Kerberos), the Web GUI now always uses a single database pool user to connect. This change is required for future developments but also offers a number of important advantages right now: Improved performance through more efficient connection pooling.
